With over a billion devices around the world running on Windows, the release of a new operating system is global news. I worked in-house at Microsoft with the Windows Insider Program, which serves a dedicated, opinionated subset of Windows users who enthusiastically beta test new features and reliably deliver unvarnished feedback.

We gave Insiders a look behind the scenes, hearing from the creators themselves about how and why they redesigned Windows 11 to be simpler, smarter and more beautiful. I was able to interview dozens of PMs, designers, devs and researchers to learn more about the many sweeping changes they made to Windows and how, precisely, it stands to benefit people who use the operating system for work or play.
